Treating your fence not only keeps it looking fresh, but also protects it from the elements all year round. With Ronseal Fence Life Plus, it’s easy to get great results that last. Here’s how to do it, step by step:

Step 1

Prepare your fence

Start by making sure your fence is completely dry—this helps the treatment soak in properly. Then give it a good clean by brushing away dirt, dust, and cobwebs. If there’s any flaky old paint or algae, remove that too so you’re working with a smooth surface.

Step 2

Choose your application method

You can apply Ronseal Fence Life Plus with a brush or a sprayer. A brush gives you more control and is great for smaller areas or awkward corners. A sprayer is quicker and ideal for covering larger sections—just make sure to mask off any areas you don’t want to catch overspray.

Step 3

Apply the treatment

Stir the paint well before you start. Apply a generous, even coat using long, smooth strokes. For rough sawn wood, two coats should do the job. Smooth planed or older, weathered wood may need three or more for full coverage and protection.

Step 4

Let it dry and protect

Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next—check the tin for drying times, especially if rain is forecast. Once dry, your fence will be weatherproof and looking like new, with protection that lasts for up to five years.

Application Made Easy

  • Preparation is Key:

    • Clean and Dry:
Make sure the fence is free from dirt, cobwebs, moss, algae, lichen, or any other debris.

    • Masking:
Protect areas you don’t want painted—like fence posts, plants, or nearby surfaces—by covering them up.

    • Rough Sawn Wood:
Usually needs two coats to achieve up to 5 years of colour protection.

    • Smooth Planed Wood:
May need three coats to ensure lasting coverage and durability.

    • Weathered Wood:
Could require extra coats, depending on its condition.
  • 2. Application:

    Brushing:

    • Load your brush generously with paint—enough to coat well, but not too runny.
    • Apply a thick, even layer, following the direction of the wood grain.
    • If you spot any drips, simply brush them out.

    • Overlap strokes slightly to ensure full coverage.

    Spraying:

    • Fill your sprayer with paint and apply using smooth, steady sweeps.
    • Overlap each pass by around 50% to prevent patchiness.
    • Adjust the sprayer’s accuracy and speed settings to suit different parts of the fence.
    • Keep the nozzle between 15–25 cm away from the surface for best results.
  • 3. Drying Time:

    • Ronseal One Coat becomes rainproof in just one hour and dries fully within four.

    • If you’re not sure it’s ready, it’s best to wait the full recommended drying time before adding a second coat.

To clean your fence with Ronseal, begin by choosing the right product—either a cleaner like Ronseal Decking Cleaner & Reviver, or a protective coating such as Ronseal Fence Life Plus. For cleaning, apply the product using a sprayer or brush, scrub the surface, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. If you're applying a protective finish, use a sprayer or brush to coat the fence evenly, overlapping your strokes for full coverage.
